When came home and started using the wifi I got the same problem (Gradle sync failed: Connection timed out). All did is modify gradle.properties file under Gradle Scripts. I just removed the proxy settings that were stored in that file. Everything's back to normal now. We have since adjusted that inactivity time out to 30 minutes. For unknown reasons beginning with version 8.0.13 of the Mac client the inactivity disconnect began working. Check the connection from 1 machine to other by pinging. ping 192.168.1.2 for example. Use the same ip you are trying to connect to. Your EC2's public DNS might (will) change when it's restarted. If you don't realize this and attempt to SSH into your old public DNS, the connection will stall and time out. I can't tell if the ":" means separation ie. listing two ports or it means a range of ports in this router. I don't believe you can do either and have it translated to a single port as you have.
